In Grade 1-3 the report can be split for the Tasks as per activities contained. It would be great to have that split on Grade 4-9 to afford proper analysis and intervention. Can that be made possible in 12.9.12

  What is SA-SAMS?

SA-SAMS is an acronym used to refer to the "South African School Administration and Management System". It is basically a software suite comprising a base software application (computer program) and separate software modules, integrated in union.

Schools used separate applications in their day-to-day running, e.g. separate Administration Systems for Learners, Curriculum-related Data, Finances, Timetabling, the Library, etc. and heaps of manually prepared reports and lists. This resulted in a continuous, time-consuming, counter-productive cycle of duplication of data into three - or more - separate systems. Incompatible systems, regular updates, expensive training for individuals, exaggerated licensing fees, development and support costs were frequently prevalent. Thus, SA-SAMS was developed.

SA-SAMS is a robust, actively developed and maintained computer application, specifically designed to meet all Administration, Management and Governance needs of South African Schools (Public, Specialised, Full-Service and Private). The solution has a strong EMIS focus to assist Schools, PEDs and DBE in record keeping, reporting and statistical analysis, by means of an innovative approach that allows end-users to shape the development of the solution itself. Data is collected on a National basis by means of LURITS (the Learner Unit Record Information and Tracking System), where it can be securely accessed for further analysis (Data Driven Districts) for effective decision-making on various levels.

SA-SAMS provides Schools with a free, easy to use and fully integrated software solution, containing all aspects of School Administration, Management and Governance requirements, in one package. A Timetabling Assistant (by means of TimeDesign) was integrated to assist Schools with the tedious, time-consuming and complicated task of allocating Educators to Subjects and Classes, seamlessly. The user interface provides easy access to various Modules and is specifically adapted to cater for novice to expert computer users. A button interface and user prompting mechanism is used, as opposed to more complicated and less user-friendly menu-based structures.

Although an initial encounter with SA-SAMS may seem somewhat overwhelming, once a user masters the basics, it grows to form an essential resource in managing the day-to-day running of the school.

SA-SAMS is not merely a school administration system. Important advantages of using the software entail:

  • being made available to South African Schools free of charge;
  • addressing a school's administrative, management and governance needs;
  • regular updates to align the software with National requirements in terms of changes in Legislation, Policies and Procedures;
  • the accommodation of software bug-fixes, new and extended feature requests;
  • keeping track of registered learners on a National scale, and
  • little effort to seamless integration in reporting statistical information (surveys) to Provincial EMIS Sections and DoE at National level.
The implementation and development of SA-SAMS is a continuous, joint partnership between SITA (the State Information Technology Agency), DBE (the Department of Basic Education, PEDs (Provincial Education Departments), School Districts and staff members at school level.

Welcome to the our new Forum.

My name is Ashraf Edross and I created this website a few years ago as a thank you gesture to the SA-SAMS team based in Pretoria, (Carinne van der Westhuizen) that really went out of their way to help me get SA-SAMS going at our school here in the Western Cape.

I'm a teacher at Bishop Lavis High school and we have have been using SA-SAMS since 2013. I have helped a few schools in my Metro to implement SA-SAMS and this has now started to take off. Currently WCED is launching a pilot SA-SAMS project with 5 schools. Special thanks to Moederick Jacobs, E-learning facilitator in Metro North who has always availed himself to get more schools on board to use SA-SAMS.

The website consists of three core sections, the Joomla based frontend, that you land on when visiting the site. The second part is the Moodle module that contains the Online Learning section (this needs to get going ASAP, any volunteers please contact us). The third section is this Forum that is based on the MyBB CMS, that we are currently migrating too.

This new forum is the brain child of SarelK, who is based in the Free State, who so kindly volunteered to restructure this important section of the SA-SAMS website to make it easier for users to use and benefit from. I know that with Sarel's great ICT skills and expertise, this forum will become a must goto for anyone who needs guidance with all facets of the great piece of software called SA-SAMS.

We hope that you become a regular visitor to our site and that you can share your expertise with users of SA-SAMS across South Africa.

1. General Arrangements:

1.1 These rules supplement the "SA-SAMS Forum - Registration Agreement" that you accepted by registering as a user of this forum.

1.2 Forum Administrators reserve the right to amend the rules from time-to-time, as may be deemed necessary. It is the user's sole responsibility to keep abreast of changes in the rules.

1.3 A Glossary of Terms is  included at the bottom, for common abbreviations used.

1.4 Interpretation of the rules is up to the Administrators. Comments or discussions on other interpretations of the rules is not allowed on the forum. If you have a problem with any rule in particular, take it up with an Administrator by means of a PM or on e-mail.

1.5 Whether intended or purely by accident, impersonation of Forum Staff is not allowed.  Please refrain from using forum names containing text that might potentially lead users to believe that this is the case. 2. Attitude on the Forum:

2.1 We are all professionals. Treat everybody as you would have liked yourself to be treated - with respect.

Please view it in that light and do not rant and rave if you do not receive quick responses all the time.  We endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible.

3. Forum Content:

3.2 Be careful of religious/traditional discussions that may be offensive to other people.  On the forum, we acknowledge that we share a rich, multi-cultural society that respect the viewpoints of other religions and traditions.  Whether we agree or don't agree on religious/traditional matters, is not discussion material for this forum.

3.3 It is not allowed to post confidential/sensitive private message (PM) conversations between members of the forum in public.  Not here on the forum, nor anywhere else.

3.4 Posting of content irrelevant to the section or topic at hand, will be moved to an appropriate section.

3.5 Fraudulent scams of any nature are strictly forbidden and will surely lead to a perma-ban and IP-address ban.

3.6 Double-posting is not encouraged, but if you really need to add something and cannot edit your post, it is allowed.

4. Accounts, Warnings and Bans:

4.1 Every user is encouraged to register and use a single forum account.  Multiple account registrations and the use thereof may lead to all of the accounts ending up perma-banned.

4.2 In cases where two or more users share an IP-address and have accounts on the forum (typical of school networks), it is advisable to inform an Administrator, ONLY if a query arises that ended in a multi-account (more than one account per user) ban.

4.3 Sharing your account with another person is strictly prohibited and may result in a permanent ban.

5.4 Avatars should be a reasonable size, proportionate to the forum requirements.

5.5 The use of animated .GIF files as Avatars is not prohibited, but such files may be removed if found that it hampers the forum's overall performance.

5.6 Images may be attached or embedded within posts, only if absolutely necessary and should not exceed 100 kb per image.

5.7 Moderators or Administrators may remove any pictures deemed to be oversized at any time, without prior notification.

5.8 No more than five pictures may be placed inside any single post.

5.9 If information in a really large image must be passed on to Forum Staff, obtain an e-mail address and mail it.

6. Forum Language:

6.1 The Forum language is English. Considering that we have a wide audience that can collaborate and benefit from your inputs/questions, we ask that you respect this.

6.2 If English is not your native language, give it your best shot. We are here to learn; not to make fun of others' typing mistakes/incorrect grammar.

6.3 Typing in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS is the equivalent of shouting, which is plain rude - unless you wish to emphasize three or four words.

6.4 Considering context, inappropriate or "foul" language will not be tolerated. The definition of what constitutes "foul language" and what doesn't will be at the sole discretion of the Forum Staff and is not open for discussion, regardless of whether it appears in a dictionary or not.

6.5 Not everyone is familiar with acronyms such as TTYL, BRB, AFK, BBL, LOL, ROFL, etc. Respect that and type out proper words and sentences, if in doubt.

6.6 Preferably, posts should contain a minimum of two words, e.g. "Thank you".

6.7 The Forum Staff reserve the right to censor posts. This will be indicated in the relevant post, e.g. "EDIT: ...".

7. Advertisement, Promotion and Degradation:

7.1 Any in-forum activity and/or advertisement (via forum post or PM) to promote/degrade specific schools, government, religions, institutions, people, websites, items, etc. and/or linking to other Internet content with the purpose to promote or degrade any such content, that may at any time be deemed offensive by any member of the forum, is not allowed.

8. Disclaimer:

8.1 Although we endeavor to ensure that this forum is managed properly and that it contains only appropriate content, kindly note that the Forum Staff cannot make any warranties that no such content will slip by.  If it happens, at no stage should it be seen that it is endorsed or approved by the Forum Staff.  Please reported any content deemed unfeasible to the Forum Staff immediately.

Information Change of Forum Software

Hi, everybody.

Over the past couple of days Ashraf and I have discussed moving the forum from Kunena to MyBB for various reasons, being mainly:

  • the display of MyBB being more "friendly" towards both desktop and mobile users (e.g. not having to expand replies to view them);
  • ease of administration (I'm not that familiar with Kunena) and Ashraf will be leaning heavily on me to assist with this role, due to other real-life commitments that he has.
Between the two of us, we have carefully weighed the pros and cons and decided to make the change.  Unfortunately, sometimes change hurts, in particular that:
  • our users will have to re-register on the new forum software, which is a tad inconvenient, agreed.
  • we won't be carrying over posts from Kunena, due to the difficulty of switching platforms from Kunena to MyBB.
As a result, we thought it best to take the plunge sooner, rather than later.  We do apologise sincerely for any inconvenience caused on account of this, but wish to assure you that we do not foresee this reoccurring any time soon, if ever again.  As unfortunate and inconvenient as it may seem now, know that it is for the greater good, now and looking to the future.

Hi, everybody.

My name is Sarel and I will be your new forum administrator, working closely with Ashraf to ensure that you have as smooth a forum experience as possible.  Ashraf will be taking care of a lot of the technical stuff (he's really good at that!), while I will focus more on the forum administration side of things.

I am currently the ICT Manager at a Primary School in Bloemfontein (Free State). Among a myriad of other stuff, I also fulfil the role of SA-SAMS Administrator and would classify myself as a mid to intermediate user in most things related to the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Phases. For a guy, I think that I'm pretty good at multi-tasking. [Image: grin.png]

I am interested in computers and gadgets (stuff that have lights and go "bling!"), martial arts, reading, watching series and movies, and I play the electric guitar.

My expectations for this Forum is to help the community grow, to assist where I can by either answering your questions or getting some answers for you, to learn with you, as well as to make some new friends along the way.
